Get Down to the Dungeon

Valkyrie Junior finally brings together the thrill of dungeon crawling with the sophistication of a disco beat. Dance past ghosts and other hazards, grab the key and unlock the next high-stepping level.

This game is an entry for DragonRuby Classics Jam: Gauntlet Edition. It is inspired by the classic arcade game "Gauntlet".

Important: this game wants you to WEAR HEADPHONES

Controls:

Arrow keys to move.

Press + or - to control the volume

Press BACKSPACE to restart the game from the beginning.

How to play:

Listen to the hand-clap sound. You can only move 1 time between claps. You MUST move in that time.

If you move onto a cracked square, you will die.

If you stay on the same square too long, you will die.

If you get too close to a ghost, you will die.

Get to the exit without falling through cracks in the floor or being accosted by ghosts.

Grab the key or the exit will stay locked.

Grab the treasure for extra points.

Step onto the bones to destroy them and stop ghosts emerging.

Raised squares are safe. You will never fall through a raised square. Ghosts will never move onto a raised square. Use them to help you on your way.

Frustrating and fun :) Easy to understand but easy to get to cocky and die...

Thanks for the feedback! Glad you had fun.

This games fun but also frustrating -- not in a bad way, the game feels fair and despite having lots of rng elements it feels like if your smart and have patience you won't die.
Reminds me a bit of bop-it, making quick easy decisions between music beats and eventually you mess up due to time pressure.
I'm on level 31, happy the BPM locked at 160 :P

I only see 1 thing potentially wrong with the game.
The closed treasure chest sprite with a key hole is potentially confusing when the other interactable is a key.
And on Linux Mint when the song changes I get a loud audio pop, which is a shame because otherwise the audio is fantastic :)
(Might check later if this also happens on windows.)

But yea, the game's fun <3

Thank you 8bitpineapple. These are all good observations and I'm impressed that you made it to level 31.

Beyond 160bpm the music feels absurdly rushed so that's where I capped it. After that, the frequency of ghosts increases a bit and the max number of ghosts continues to climb. If this were not a time-limited jam game, I would have liked to add story elements, pickups, extra moves and so on to keep the interest going in different ways.

Good point about the chest. I wanted to keep it recognisably similar to Gauntlet but maybe a coin or a diamond, or even a disco ball would have been better.

The changeover from one tempo to the next is not very smooth anyway. I should see if a fast fade-out will fix it.

Thanks again for all the feedback!

I think it's a great idea and once you get in the zone you just want to keep playing. And the music is awesome! Great job!

Thanks a bunch!
